Dealing with Dental Emergencies

I am in pain! Is it an emergency? Many patients never have to deal with dental emergencies. They can be considered the lucky ones, but for those of us who do, here are some good tips. As a general rule, if you are in significant pain that disrupts your daily tasks and does not subside with ibuprofen or acetaminophen, it is an emergency. Dr. Johnson at Heartfelt Family Dental wants you to know we that are here to help in your time of urgent need!

Knocked Out or Lost Teeth

The most critical thing to know about a knocked out tooth is how to preserve it. First, it is essential to keep the tooth moist. Pick up the tooth from the top, avoiding the root if possible. Attempt to place the tooth back in socket; otherwise put tooth and any particles in a container of milk. Call our office for an emergency appointment.

Broken/Chipped Tooth

When our teeth are exposed to intense, quick pressure from a blow to the face or biting on hard items, such as ice or a metal fork, they can crack and chip. If a chip or crack causes you serious pain call us for an appointment. Broken, chipped, or cracked teeth without serious pain are not causes for emergent care, but please call to set up an appointment as soon as possible.

Broken/Lost Temporary Crown

Dental crowns patients are required to wear a temporary crown while the permanent restoration is being created. Temporary crowns are not as strong as the final product and are prone to breaking or falling off.  This situation is not an emergency unless you are in severe pain. Call our office for the next available appointment. If the temporary crown is in one piece, you may dry it off, put a small amount of toothpaste in it, and reset it on the permanent tooth for a temporary repair.

Torn Gums, Lacerated Tongue, Broken Jaw

A soft tissue injury that would require stitches to repair, or a broken jawbone should be directed to the nearest emergency room. If teeth were damaged in the accident, call our office to discuss the next steps for dental repairs.

At Heartfelt Family Dental Excellence, we understand the need for same-day appointments, especially when our patients are in pain. As a devoted dental team in Coeur d’Alene, ID, we will go the extra mile for our patients.
